Six Years Without a Single Day Off: Making it Work Because You Have To

by Yuwanda Black

If your back is up against the wall and you fear you can't go on freelancing, looking for a job, running your business, read on to learn how you can do it, even when you think you can't.

I once worked with a gentleman from Africa. During the course of our friendship, I learned that at one stretch, he worked six years without a day off. Not - one - single - day.

We won't discuss the legalities of this situation. But, his perseverance proves that it's amazing what you can do when you have to. Freelancers are faced with obstacles that seem insurmountable at times.

When my friend told me about his six-year stint -- after staring in disbelief for what seemed like an eternity -- I asked him why. . . how . . . why . . . how. I was stuttering like a three-year old.

He went on to divulge that he had a large family in Africa that depended on his income. So, he had to work. You never would have known that he was carrying such a huge responsibility because his personality was one of serenity.

Now, I approach whatever I'm doing in "have-to" mode. Failure is not an option. Removing the possibility of failure from your thinking frees up mental space to put towards achieving your goal.

This is not to say that you shouldn't plan for the unexpected. In business/freelancing, it's not "if" the unexpected will happen, it's "when." So, how does one adopt a have-to attitude, yet still prepare for pitfalls?

1. Create a mantra: Eg, "This will work because it has to. I just have to find a way." Don't allow for what-ifs, maybes or just-in-cases. Repeat your mantra and forge ahead.

2. Devise a plan: All the mantras in the world will not help if you don't have a plan. Devise one and carry it out. If one plan doesn't work, try another one.

3. Persevere: Montel Williams, the popular talk show host, had a best-selling book entitled, Mountain, Get out of My Way. It's about overcoming trials and tribulations.

The title alludes to the fact that you have to be willing to move, go over, under and around barriers in order to achieve your goals. In other words, there's more than one way to get where you want to be. The point is to not give up.

When you put forth supreme effort, the universe recognizes and rewards you for it. What does that mean? Have you ever given something your all and just when you decide to give up, something happens to make you hang in there? This is what I mean.

If you are giving one hundred percent, things will happen "out of the blue, all of a sudden, just like that." Only, that's not really the case. This is the universe rewarding your efforts; alerting you to the fact that, "Your work is being recognized. Hang in there."

You may be wondering, "What if it doesn't pan out? What if my plans really don't come to fruition?"

Sometimes, the plans we make are not what the universe has in store for us. Every failure is but a road map for future success. So, thoroughly examine your failures for the message.

I once read somewhere that the average millionaire fails at six businesses before making their first million. So, maybe you've just begun your journey. The only true failure is in not trying and giving it your all. If success were easy, we'd all have it.

Remember, success is being thankful for what you already have and what you are willing to work hard enough to achieve.
