Let Freedom Ring! Cashing the Check of Entrepreneurship

Have you ever read Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech? [See link to speech at end of article]. The passages that stand out to me are the ones that deal with the cashing of a check.

Although Dr. King's check was paid in the form of civil rights, the parallels of how, arguably, one of the greatest speeches of our time is filled with business references got me to thinking.

Dr. King wrote, "I have a dream today." My question to you is, "Do you have an entrepreneurial dream?" Do you dream of owning a business but don't know where to start to make it a reality. Are you limited by money, education, time?

America, unlike any place on earth, represents opportunity. Sure, some have easier access to opportunity than others; this is life. However, this is not an excuse to quit, give up, fail to begin. Only by taking the first step is a second one possible. Find your opportunity!

As Dr. King so eloquently wrote, " . . . refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation."

Another passage in Dr. King's speech reads: "When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir . . .
the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

I'll bet you didn't know that it was your constitutional, not to mention, God-given, right to pursue happiness?
Seriously, the framers of the Constitution thought this concept so important, they made it a part of our founding principles.

So m
y question to you today is, "Do you take your happiness seriously?" Are you happy in your job? Are you wasting away in a job you hate? Do you dread Monday mornings? Then take steps to change your situation. The only way to make a change is to start doing something toward your dream.

Start a small business class to learn what you need to know; work a second job to secure start-up funds; volunteer at a like business so you can see what it's like to work in your chosen field. Remember, the actions you take today directly impact where you will be tomorrow.

The last words in Dr. King's speech read, "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

When your goal seems out of reach, think of the day you will be able to utter these words. Think of cleaning out your desk, turning over the office key to your supervisor, relinquishing your company ID badge and walking out the doors for the last time.

This is the day you cash the check of entrepreneurship and all of its promises — freedom, personal fulfillment and happiness.
