Basic SEO Tips for Freelance Writers
Increase Website Traffic with These Search Engine Optimization Tips

by Yuwanda Black
[Want to start a successful career as a freelance writer? Click here.]

If you’re a freelance writer trying to increase your website and/or blog traffic, becoming familiar with search engine optimization (SEO) techniques is no longer an option, it’s a must.  When you consider that some experts estimate that as many as 100,000 new websites go live every day, it’s easy to get lost online. And, this may be a conservative number.

Following are 10 basic SEO tips that every freelance writer can use to start increasing website traffic – and you don’t even have to be a technophile to implement them.

1. SEO Tips for Web Pages: One thing I wish I’d done years ago was to treat each of my web pages as its own minisite. Why is this important? When you treat each page individually instead of as one part of a whole, you optimize it based on its own merit.

For example, you would give it its own unique title, not one that appears on every other page of your site. You’d choose a specific keyword phrase to optimize the text for. You’d choose related articles to link to that are relevant to just the subject matter that is on that page.

These specific SEO tips are the foundation of what search engine optimization is all about. So, when you sit down to write a page for your site, or to compose a blog post, be very specific in your subject matter because ideally, every post you write will answer a specific question a surfer has. And, this is what a good website/blog is made up of --- specific, usable information that gives readers an “aha” moment.

The more your content can do this, the more visitors you will attract.

2. SEO Tips for Intra-site Linking: What I mean by this is, links from one page of your site that link to another page on your site. This is important to search engines because they read it as if you have an “authority site.”

Think logically about it. If your site has lots of links between the pages, then it must be rich in content on that subject, right? Before I even knew the importance of this, I was doing it simply because I wanted to give readers an option for finding out more if they so wished.

A side effect of this is that visitors will stay on your site longer, hence giving you a chance to get them hooked on your content – hooked enough to subscribe to your newsletter, buy your ebook or sign up for your teleclass. Bottom line: the more time a visitor stays on your site, the better chance you have of converting them into loyal, paying customers at some point.

3. SEO Tips for Creating Anchor Text: You may be thinking, “What the heck is anchor text?” Anchor text is when you link to another page and instead of the general "click here”, with "here" being the clickable link, you make the link the text that describes what you’re talking about. For example, I wrote an article entitled How to Make Money Blogging by Selling Your Blog Posts.

Instead of saying click here to read this article, I created the link from the anchor text in the title “make money blogging.”

This is a relatively new practice I’ve started and the way I remind myself to use this SEO tip is to never make the word(s) “click here” clickable.” I always try to find a descriptive keyword/keyword phrase to make my link out of. The rationale behind this is that anchor text helps search engine spiders to discern what the linked-to page is all about. "Click here" means zilch to search engines.

 4. SEO Tips for Web Analytics Tools: Become familiar with and use these tools regularly.

Yet again, you may be wondering, what the heck are web analytics tools? In simplest terms, web analytics tools are tools webmasters use to gather data for internet marketing purposes. They can be anything from Google’s AdWord Keyword Tool to free hit counters that track how many visitors your site receives on a given day.

One that you should become familiar with is Google’s Keyword Tool, mentioned just above. You need an account to access it, but it’s free to set up. I use this tool to select relevant, high-traffic keywords in my niche on which to write about, which leads to my next tip – writing keyword-rich articles.

5. SEO Tips for Writing Keyword Rich Articles: Lately, before I sit down to write an article, I will use Google’s Keyword Tool to see which keywords I should base my content on.

For example, if I wanted to write on article marketing. I’ll type this phrase into the keyword analyzer and see what kind of traffic this phrase gets. One of the best things about Google’s Keyword Tool is that it acts as a thesaurus of sorts for keyword phrases.

So for example, if you wanted to write about article marketing, it may return results that show that another phrase gets more traffic. So, instead of optimizing your article for the keyword phrase “article marketing,” you’d optimize it for “writing articles”. Note: This is just an example.

You don’t change the content of your article, you just use a different phrase more to describe what you’re talking about.

6. SEO Tips for Photo & Video File Naming: When you name your photo or video files descriptively, search engines can more easily identify what the content is about. This leads to more page views.

Let’s use a .jpg photo file as an example. If you had a job site for freelance writers and you uploaded a graphic to the job leads page, instead of naming the file .jpg2, name it “editing-jobs2.jpg.”

This will give the search engine a clue as to what the content is about so that it can be returned in relevant search results.

7. SEO Tips for Search Engine Friendly URLs: When you name your files, use hyphens to create search engine friendly URLs, instead of underscores.  This is very important because search engines read hyphens as a space, meaning that they recognize the words on each side of the hyphen as separate entities. This is not true when it comes to underscores.

To use an example, if a web surfer typed in the phrase “SEO Writer” and your file was named “seo-writer.htm,” for example, the search engine would return that page as a result. It would not do so if it was named “seo_writer.htm.”

8. SEO Tips for Title Tags. This is one of the most vital SEO tips you can use to increase traffic to your website or blog. As alluded to in the first SEO tip discussed here, don’t get lazy and name all of your site’s pages the same thing. Every page on your website should have a unique title.

The title tag should contain your main keyword phrase. It is the information that is visible in the bar across the top at the top of a page when you’re on a website, so it should be directly relevant to what’s on the page.

Some expert say that it’s difficult to rank high for a primary keyword phrase without it being part of the page title. That’s why the title of this page is Basic SEO Tips for Freelance Writers (look at the top of the page).

9. SEO Tips for Beginners: If you want to increase web traffic, you must take it upon yourself to learn about search engine optimization. This means setting aside time to learn about the things discussed here – and so many more.

SEO is not knowledge you can learn once and then forget. It’s an ongoing, ever-changing field. What may have been true a year ago may well be different now. And, there’s always new technology coming out that affects the industry as well. So, you must constantly educate yourself.

But one thing I can tell you from personal experience with my websites, and in my career as an SEO writer, the more knowledgeable you are, the more you will be able to sell clients on your services – and generate traffic for your own website/blog.

10. SEO Tips for Implementation: I’ve implemented several of the tips discussed here to optimize this page, just to show you how seamless it is once you get used to doing it, ie:

Title Tag: The title tag for this article which is visible across the top of the page is “Basic SEO Tips for Freelance Writers.”

Primary Keyword Phrase in Title:  The primary keyword phrase for this article is SEO Tips.

If you keep these basic tips in mind every time you sit down to write an article, before long you will have a site full of keyword rich, excellent content (which wasn’t mentioned as an SEO tip, because it should be obvious) that will increase traffic to your site.

The bottom line: search engine optimization is not hard, if you learn  and implement consistently  basic SEO tips.
